The military has issued a warning to Nigerians calling for a coup over the hardship in the land.
Some Nigerians, on social media, have suggested that the military should overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu who they accused of lacking initiative to end the current economic hardship.
Reacting to the call, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, said those making such insinuations do not mean well for the country.
Musa said the Armed Forces would continue to do the needful to protect the country’s democracy.
He spoke while responding to questions from newsmen shortly after he commissioned the main entrance of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army and Officers Transit Accommodation, both at the Division Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
While admitting that the country was experiencing some challenges, he said coup calls were improper because nations achieve more and develops faster under a democracy.
“Whoever is making that call (coup) does not love Nigeria. We want to make it very clear that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are here to protect democracy. We all want democracy and we do better under democracy. And so we will continue to support democracy. And any of those ones that are calling for anything other than Democracy are evil people and I think they don’t mean well for Nigeria.
“And they should be very careful because the law will come after them. We can see that with democracy a lot of things are happening in Nigeria. Yes we are going through trying periods, I mean in life nothing is hundred percent.”
He emphasized that what is needed is for citizens to be patient and give their support to the government to succeed and put the enemies of state to shame.
“Everybody goes through a trying period in life, and it is what you do with them. You can see the government putting efforts to ensure that we come out better. And it is when you go through difficulties and come out better you will really appreciate what it is to build a nation. And so we are going through our trying period, but I can assure Nigerians that it will get better.

“All we need is for all of us to put our hands together to ensure that we defeat those enemies of the government, those enemies of this country that don’t want us to succeed. We will surely succeed and the Armed Forces are here to support the Government in ensuring that we develop, we succeed and to see that there is peace in Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, the Osun Civil Societies Coalition, OCSC, has called on the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to look beyond making millions of Naira available to governors as palliatives and think of ways to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians.
The OCSC Chairman, Waheed Lawal, made the call on Thursday during a protest organised by civil society organisations over the high cost of living and economic hardship in the country.
Protesters moved from Nelson Mandela Freedom Park and ended at the popular Olaiya-Overhead Bridge in Osogbo.
The protest was tagged ”OSOGBO ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, President Bola Tinubu let the poor breathe.”

Lawal said, “President Bola Tinubu must look beyond giving millions of naira as palliatives to governors to addressing their hungry subjects but rather find a lasting solution to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians.”
The OCSC Chairman also condemned the decision of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, to back out of the proposed two-day nationwide protest.
Lawal said the last minute decision by the TUC to back out of a proposed protest which both labour unions agreed upon was worrisome.
He said the union ought to have aligned itself with the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, in the best interest of about 200 million Nigerians facing economic hardship and high cost of living.
”I would have loved the TUC to see reason why they ought not to back out at this point because the two-day proposed protest is for the best interest of all Nigerians.
”The both labour unions should try and sort things out on or before the commencement of the protest. But if TUC failed to join, we support NLC to carry on with the strike,” Lawal said.
Also, Wale Adebisi, Director, Ola-Oni Centre, said the protest in Osogbo will send a signal to those in authority that February 27 and 28 would be the mother of all protests across the country.
Adebisi advised President Tinubu to fulfill his promises to Nigerians after the removal of fuel subsidy that has worsened the economic predicament in the country.
